Geological evolution of the Western Carpathians

Seminar „Geological evolution of the Western Carpathians“ will be held on 18 January (at 9:30 a.m.) at the Institute of Geology of the CAS. Details in invitation (in Czech only).

Institute of Geology co-organized the ICOS 2017 International Symposium

The 4th International Conodont Symposium jointly with the International Subcommission on Devonian Stratigraphy and the International Subcommission on Silurian Stratigraphy (ICS/IUGS) took place in June 2017 in Valencia, Spain. This important event was focused on progress in the investigation of enigmatic conodont organisms that are considered direct ancestors of vertebrates. They are fundamental for global stratigraphy of the Paleozoic, dating marine sedimentary rocks, thus serving as a basis for subsequent geological studies. Specialists and stratigraphers from five continents took part in the follow-up Post-Symposium Excursion to the Prague Synform and Carnic Alps.

Institute of Geology, CAS will contribute to the international scientific and artistic project on landscape

The artistic and scientific project Frontiers of Solitude comes to its final phase: artwork created during the field work will be exhibited. The main exhibition will take place in the Školská 28 Gallery, Prague, on 2nd February to 4th March 2015. The works by Czech, Norwegian and Icelandic artists will reflect the landscapes of Iceland, northern Norway and northern Bohemia visited by the artists within three expeditions together with experts in Earth sciences, biology and ecology (Institute of Geology CAS was represented by Václav Cílek and Radek Mikuláš during the northern Bohemian expedition). The whole project is focused on a comparison of the opinions, experiences and standpoints among artists, scientists and invited guests on the theme of interactions between post-industrial society and the landscape in which we live. The exhibition will be accompanied by the publication of a comprehensive catalogue in English and Czech.

ISSS Workshop, Prague 2015, GSSPs of the Silurian stages revisited

An international workshop focused on current agenda and research in the re-assessment of the GSSPs (i.e. global boundary stratotype sections and points) of some Silurian stages and series will be held on July 29–30, 2015. It is organized by the Institute of Geology CAS and Czech Geological Survey in collaboration with the International Subcommission on Silurian Stratigraphy (ISSS). An indoor session of the working group lasting one day will be held at the Institute of Geology of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague 6, Lysolaje. A field trip scheduled for the second day will take participants to important reference sections – potential candidates for the Aeronian and Homerian GSSPs – situated near Prague.
